The accessibility statement for the Volunteer Portal

Worcestershire County Council is committed to making its websites and applications accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This accessibility statement applies to the Worcestershire County Council Volunteer Portal.

This website is run by the provider TeamKinetic. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard (including skip to content or skip to main navigation)
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Non-accessible content

We know some parts of this website aren’t fully accessible:

  • some interactive elements do not have a distinctive focus state when using a keyboard for navigation
  • there are keyboard traps on some pop-up modal windows
  • the hamburger menu cannot be accessed via a keyboard when the site it zoomed in
  • on the page showing sessions, not all buttons in the left-hand navigation are keyboard accessible
  • the navigation isn’t always consistent throughout the site
  • the icons for Apple App Store and Google Play both announce the same for screen reader users
  • colour contrast is not sufficient in some places, e.g. member, hours logged, hours confirmed, thumbs up
  • there are no headings to assist navigation through different sections on the screen
  • page layouts do not contain coded landmarks or regions for screen reader users
  • in places there are no additional checks to prevent user errors
  • most visual buttons are coded as links for users using screen reader elements list

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliance issues identified below:

  • Keyboard focus states have poor contrast so sometimes it is difficult to understand where you are on the page (WCAG 2.4.13 Focus Appearance)
  • There are some empty tab indexes for keyboard accessibility that announce as ‘JavaScript void’ or ‘blank’ (WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard)
  • The 'this opportunity has pre-requisites' pop-up is not keyboard accessible and creates a keyboard trap that prevents you from applying for a role (WCAG 2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap)
  • When zoomed in at 250% on the dashboard and other similar areas you cannot access the hamburger menu via a keyboard (WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard, 1.4.10 Reflow)
  • Icons for Apple App Store and Google Play have the same alt text so difficult to know which is which (WCAG No 1.1.1 Non-text context)
  • Icons for social media e.g. Facebook, X, Pinterest and LinkedIn all announce as ‘void’ (WCAG No 1.1.1 Non-text context)
  • On the page showing sessions and logging hours, you cannot use the left-hand menu using only a keyboard, you can only go back, so you can't log hours (WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard)
  • Logging hours form fields are not labelled as hours and minutes making it difficult to understand and use with a screen reader (WCAG 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions)
  • The delete button on the logging hours form does not announce what it is deleting or check you want to delete your recorded hours (WCAG 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions, WCAG 3.3.6 Error Prevention)
  • Colour contrast is not sufficient in some places, e.g. member, hours logged, hours confirmed, thumbs up (WCAG No 1.4.3 contrast minimum)
  • There is no level 1 heading on most pages and sections that should be a heading to assist navigation are not marked as a heading (WCAG 2.4.10 Section Headings, 2.4.6 Headings and Labels)
  • The page layout does not contain coded landmarks for screen reader users (WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships)
  • In some places there is no option to undo an action, e.g. to ‘leave’ a job summary you accidentally leave the job opportunity you are signed up to (WCAG 3.3.6 Error Prevention)
  • The QR code for ‘checking in’ has no alternative link or alt instructions for users to do this so serves no purpose unless you have an extra device (WCAG 2.4.5 Multiple Ways)
  • Some instructions or language used is not fully clear as to the job application process e.g. adding some basic pre-requisite information then announces that as being your job application which is confusing (WCAG 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions, WCAG 3.3.6 Error Prevention)
