Presented by Dr Angie Butler.
‘The object we call a book is not the real book, but its potential…’ (Rebecca Solnit).
Introducing Book Arts practice and research through examples of historical and contemporary writing, visuals, actions and experiences. The talk is divided into chapters, each relates to an artefact, project or event that combines knowledge, creative disciplines and methods together, working with people and environments associated to book practices. Outcomes are examined through the range of skills, thinking and perspectives that are involved. The book is celebrated as a vital visual art form, where the book format itself is an integral part of artistic expression, blending literary and visual elements and challenging traditional boundaries between artistic disciplines.
Dr Angie Butler is an artist-printer and practice-led scholar, committed to ongoing research within Book Arts, including letterpress printing, artists’ books, small press publishing and embodied research, studying sensory and sensitive approaches to studio practice. She utilises letterpress printing, stitch practices and the book as collaborative spaces, to connect people and language through shared haptic experience. She works with individuals and organisations, developing partnerships with artists, galleries, libraries, museums, poets, printers, publishers, scholars, writers, and curators on UK and international studio projects, practice-related research and events.
