Join academics from the University of Worcester as they explore how our accents tell the story of where we have lived and who we have connected with.
In the first part of the session, Lorna Williams and Isabelle Schafer will explore how we relate to our own accents and why the way we sound matters. They will examine some of the challenges speakers may face, including bias, and consider the assumptions that listeners may make.
Through discussion and reflection, they will explore how greater awareness can lead to more inclusive and effective communication. In the second part of the session, join them for a lively roundtable exploring how accents shape the way we model phonics in the early years. Together, you will reflect on how the sounds we use can influence children’s understanding and confidence as they begin their reading journey.
Lorna Williams is the Early Years (0–5) Initial Teacher Training Course Leader at the Institute of Education, University of Worcester, and the Early Years Lead within the Primary team. Isabelle Schafer is the International Coordinator for the Institute of Education at the University of Worcester and the PGCE Modern Languages Secondary Lead.
