Emily at St John’s Library celebrating World Book Day

Libraries across Worcestershire are inviting families to celebrate the magic of reading this World Book Day, as part of the National Year of Reading.

Dressing up as your favourite character is just the beginning. World Book Day is about inspiring a love of reading and sparking imagination for children of all ages.

Worcestershire County Council’s libraries are committed to ensuring every child has access to books and the lifelong benefits of reading, from improved confidence and wellbeing to stronger literacy skills.

Every library across the county will host World Book Day themed activities, and St John’s Library is an official voucher exchange hub, allowing children not in school or nursery to collect and swap their book vouchers for books.

Councillor Ian Cresswell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities at Worcestershire County Council said:
“World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate reading at your local library. Reading for pleasure has a powerful impact on a child’s confidence, wellbeing, and future success, and we are proud to offer events that make reading fun and accessible for every child.”

Malvern Library will host self-led family activities alongside a “Meet the Author” event with Daisy Merle on Wednesday 4 March.

The event will include a reading from a book about a dog with autism, celebrating inclusive storytelling and helping children see themselves reflected in books. Warndon and Upton libraries will also run themed activities alongside their regular children’s sessions.

On Thursday 5 March, Redditch & Woodrow Libraries are running a free Storytime and craft session, with Elmer, the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and the Tiger Who Came to Tea. The session runs from 3.30-4.30 pm in the junior library, and you do not need to book.

Also taking place on Thursday 5 March, you can follow the team around the children’s library at The Hive in celebration of World Book Day.

There will be interactive stories and lots of fun to get stuck in with. For children aged 4 to 9 years. Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer throughout the event. No booking required, free of charge.

Across the Bromsgrove Library Cluster, children can take part in the annual design competition run by National Book Tokens, challenging young people to design their own National Book Token.
