People in Redditch will soon have more freedom to use their local library at a time to suit them.

Libraries Unlocked is a free membership upgrade that allows customers aged 15+ and local community groups to access the library outside staffed hours, from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday.

During Libraries Unlocked hours, anyone who has signed up for Libraries Unlocked membership can browse, borrow and return books, use a free computer or Wi-Fi, print or photocopy documents, study, hire meeting rooms, attend community events, and more!

Whether you're a student looking for a quiet place to study, a parent needing flexible access to borrow books with the children, or someone juggling work and personal commitments, Libraries Unlocked makes it easier to use your library when it suits you.

From 24 November 2025, staffed opening hours at Redditch Library will be changing. To continue enjoying full access to library services, including use of the building during extended hours, customers will need to upgrade their membership by completing a short induction.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing Libraries Unlocked to Redditch,” said Councillor Ian Cresswell, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities. “Providing greater access to libraries gives residents more freedom to use them in ways that suit their lives, and the initiative has already had a fantastic impact in other parts of the county.

”To arrange an induction, please visit Redditch Library and speak to a member of staff, or call 01905 822722 to make an appointment.

Customers have described Libraries Unlocked as: “A brilliant idea — it’s enabled us as a family to access the library more,” and “The best thing Worcestershire Libraries have done since the introduction of self-service.”
