Worcestershire County Council’s Public Health team is urging residents to take care and look out for people who may be more vulnerable during this spell of bad weather.
Taking a moment to check in on neighbours, friends, or relatives, particularly those who live alone can make a real difference. Ask if they are feeling well, whether they need any practical support, and if they have enough food and medication to get through the colder days ahead.
The Met Office have issued a Yellow Ice warning until 12:00 tomorrow as partially thawed snow in some areas of the county will likely freeze overnight as temperatures fall below freezing.
Slips, trips and falls all become more likely during cold, icy and snowy weather conditions.
You can reduce your chances of falling by keeping your hands free to help stabilise yourself, wearing shoes with good grip and avoiding going out early in the morning when frost is thick or late at night when it’s dark.
It’s also important to keep your hands free and wear gloves when walking so you can help stabilise or save yourself from a more significant injury if you were to fall.
Staying warm is vital for staying healthy during winter. Cold indoor temperatures can have a serious impact, especially for older people or those with existing health conditions.
Simple ways to keep warm include:
- Heating the rooms you use most, such as the living room or bedroom, to at least 18°C
- Reducing draughts to keep warm air inside
- Keeping bedroom windows closed at night
- Wearing several thin layers of clothing, which can be more effective than one thick layer
Director of Public Health for Worcestershire, Lisa McNally, said: “Please stay safe during this weather. If you can, take a few minutes over the next few days to check in on friends, neighbours and older or vulnerable people. Make sure they are warm, have enough food, and any medication in their homes. Cold environments can make health conditions worse and a quick visit could make a big difference, particularly for someone who lives alone.
“Please be mindful of icy conditions. If you do go out, take care and take your time, wear warm layered clothing, flat shoes with good grips and gloves.”
