Worcestershire County Council held an award ceremony at Worcestershire County Cricket Club this week to celebrate the amazing impact social workers and adult social care staff have on the people they serve

Mariana Alcea, from Worcester, one of the many award winners, was nominated by the family of the person she cares for. When Marina started working with the individual, he had not left the house in twelve years, now he actively engages in many activities in the community.

Mariana said: “Accepting the award felt very emotional. The work I have done with this particular person will always stay with me. After just a few short sessions I built up a lasting connection with him and knew he was ready to make the first step to leaving the house. He did all the work; I just planted the seed and gently encouraged him to find something that interested him. I drove him to different places and activities throughout the county, and I am delighted to hear that even when my support ended, he continues to go out and about to events. I am truly proud of him and me!”

The awards were part of Social Work Week, a national awareness week for social workers up and down the country to be celebrated and recognised for the important work they do ensuring people can remain safe, as independent as possible, and keep control over their lives.

The week also provided opportunities for interactive learning.

Social workers and social care staff were invited to tour an assistive technology flat at the Heart of Worcestershire College, showcasing how technology can enhance independence, improve outcomes and support cost effective practice within adult social care.

Employees also took part in a wide range of talks, interactive sessions and events designed to strengthen social work practice.

Mark Fitton, Director of Adult Social Care at Worcestershire County Council, added: “Social Work Week is an opportunity to recognise the professionalism, skill and compassion our social workers bring to their roles every day. I am incredibly proud of the work they do to support adults across Worcestershire, often in complex and challenging circumstances, while always keeping people’s dignity, rights and independence at the centre of all they do.”
