Worcestershire’s care experienced young people shine as mascots for Worcester City FC

A group of Worcestershire’s care experienced young people enjoyed an unforgettable evening at Worcester City Football Club, taking centre stage as official mascots for the team.

22 children and young people from Worcestershire’s Children in Care Council attended the event, which was hosted by Worcester City FC as part of its Mascot Scheme.

The highlight of the evening came when each young person proudly walked out onto the pitch alongside the players before kick-off.

The idea was brought to life by Abbie Salter, a peer mentor apprentice with Worcestershire County Council’s Youth Voice Team, who wanted to find new opportunities that matched young people’s interests. Football was high on their wish list - and thanks to a collaboration with Bosko Medakovic, Senior Coach at Worcester City FC and member of the Supporters’ Trust, that wish became reality.

Through the club’s Mascot Scheme, the group enjoyed the full matchday experience: a tour of the grounds, a coaching session on the indoor pitch, walking out with the players for the pre-match Fair Play introductions, and cheering on the team from the stands. They even got a special visit from Worcester City’s beloved mascot, Georgie Dragon, during half time.

James, one of the young people who attended, said: “It was good, I got to see my friends, and it was fun. I would definitely love to go again.”

Councillor Justin Bowen, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Children and Families said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for our care experienced young people to be part of something special and to create memories that will stay with them. We’re really grateful to Worcester City Football Club for being so welcoming and supportive, and for giving the young people such an enjoyable and inspiring experience.”

Bosko Medakovic, Senior Coach at Worcester City Football Club & Supporters’ Trust – Community Coaching Team said: “I am so glad that the group had a great time and that the youngsters enjoyed themselves - they were a fantastic group to work with!

“We are blessed with a great team of volunteer coaching colleagues who like me, love coaching children and young people regardless of their abilities. We were humbled by the fantastic work that is done by the Youth Voice Team and we are only too pleased that we could play a small part in treating these young people and their carers to an evening of recognition and participation at our home game.”
