Powick Old Bridge
This Grade I listed bridge was closed February 2024 due to a wing wall collapse. Find out about its restoration here.
Background
The Grade I listed Powick Old Bridge in Worcester was closed in February 2024 to pedestrians and cyclists for safety reasons.
Investigations showed that part of the supporting wingwall collapsed into the River Teme, resulting in loss of material and support for the main bridge section.
The collapse of the bridge, which is also recognised as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, is likely caused by recent flooding and a buildup of debris.
According to Historic England, the bridge was constructed before 1447 and was partially rebuilt during the 17th century. It is constructed from stone with brick and is approximately 60m long and up to 7m wide. The bridge has a brick parapet approximately 1m high with chamfered stone coping except on the west where it is interrupted by a road.
Latest updates
20 March
As river levels have stabilised, the long reach crane has been on site this morning, and debris accrued following the most recent wet weather has been safely removed from the river.
18 February
Water levels at Powick Old Bridge have continued to drop each day. If this trend carries on, we should be able to gain access within the next couple of weeks to remove the log resting on the concrete wall beside the far arch (see photo), along with any remaining debris in the Temporary Support Structure.

Flood update – site status
River levels are now beginning to recede; however, the site remains under severe flooding and is currently inaccessible for inspection this week. Safety remains our top priority, and we will not enter the area until conditions allow.
We’re pleased to confirm that all stockpiled materials/debris is stored above the flood zone and has not been impacted.
Our team is continuing to monitor the situation closely, carrying out daily assessments as river levels drop. Once it is safe to do so, the temporary structure will be fully inspected.
Any debris identified within the structure will be carefully removed using a smaller, mobile 3-tonne machine, operating from the platform on the Hams Way side of the bridge.
We will provide further updates in due course.
6 February
Further rainfall on 5 February has completely flooded the approaches and riverbanks. Fortunately, all debris was removed yesterday afternoon, and the crane was demobilised this morning (6 February).
We will continue to monitor the situation daily and will report back if any further debris comes down the river during this peak period.
The photos below show the river running full bore through the arches.
5 February 2026
We are pleased to confirm that the crane has been able to start removing some of the debris gathered at Powick Old Bridge, working from the bank. As river levels are still high, the platform is not accessible to allow us to safely complete the job. We will continue to monitor river levels in the coming days and will resume full clearance as soon as it is safe to do so.
4 February 2026
The long reach crane arrived on site today. We’re keeping an eye on river levels as it’s currently too high to access the platform near the bridge. As soon as it’s safe to do so, our contractor will commence debris removal.
