VU TOO

On Thursday 19 March we had our first VU Too session! VU Too is an online forum that takes place half termly during the school day. It is currently for young people who attend specialist schools and settings. We had 26 pupils from 4 different settings attend. The settings were Wyre Forest School, Nova Training Kidderminster,  Pershore High School and Bankside School.

We focused the discussion on the recently established outcomes, to understand young people's experiences and how they relate to these outcomes.

The key theme that we took away from the forum was that young people do not know what is in their community and what is going on in their community that they can access. The next meeting will focus on this and the young people are going to share what they currently access and where!

If you would like to find out more information about this new online forum, please email sendco-productionteam@worcestershire.gov.uk

What Works in SEND Event

On Wednesday 18 March Amy, Chanika, Myah and Matthew attended an event in London organised by the programme 'What Works in SEND'.

Amy and Chanika have been part of this programme for the last couple of months. It has been a place for participation officers in different local authorities to share developments, good practice and progress but also to reflect and consider next steps to strengthen co-production and participation with young people.

The day had two main elements:

  1. Councils sharing their participation developments and next steps
  2.  young person's panel where the young people answered questions regarding co-production and participation

Matthew and Myah spoke about their lived experiences and what works best for them. They shared their experiences of good practice, how to engage with young people with SEND and some do's and don'ts! Overall it was a very informative and reflective day and gave us some tangible next steps.

Sensory Audit of Worcester Royal Hospital Children's A&E

Last week the youngest members of Voices United completed a sensory audit of the Children's A&E section at Worcester Royal Hospital.

Many additional needs and disabilities have been considered and there are a range of resources available to families. You can ask a member of staff for access to fidget toys; communication mats and the sensory machine.

We have suggested a number of changes that could make a young person's experience more bearable when they need to visit including showcasing the adjustments available and a more widespread use of symbols in the departments.

Last Thursday we visited Chadsgrove Specialist College in order develop our resources for practitioners. The staff and young people there welcomed us with open arms and kindly allowed us to film parts of their day to help other learn about communication in a wide range of forms. Pendock Primary School

Amy had the pleasure of visiting Pendock Primary School yesterday to chat to the young people in 'Project Cool Kids', a self chosen name for the afternoon 'alternative provision' that some of the students are part of.

What an amazing group of young people with such positive things to say about their school! They wanted to know what Amy had written down and so today we shared some information with them to help close the feedback loop.

This will of course help the Headteacher there to use the voice of the young people to guide school improvement even further! An amazing example of Outcome 3: I am listened to, understood and involved in decisions about my life.

Youth Voice Matters Conference

On Wednesday 18 February, 4 members from Voices United went to the Youth Voice Matters event at the NEC Birmingham. The event was hosted by the Council for Disabled Children (CDC). The conference was an opportunity for community youth and participation groups to develop their participation skills and to recognise the impact they can have when taking part in strategic participation. The theme of this year's conference was youth citizenship! The members spoke to young people from other councils and were able to share idea's and thoughts.

The Voices United members took part in two workshops:

  1. Meaningful Connection in the digital age
  2. Using teamwork to make youth citizenship work

We had a great time visiting Nova Training Kidderminster on 24 February to introduce ourselves to the young people who attend. We are excited to go back and get them involved in projects we currently have active.

Church Hill Middle School

Both Amy and Chanika had the pleasure of visiting Church Hill Middle School this morning. They were there to gather young people's opinions about the school from some of the pupils who find school hard. January 2026

Vale of Evesham

We had such a productive workshop at the Vale of Evesham. We delivered a workshop around pupil voice and got the students thinking about how they can use their voice within school to be part of decisions! Outcomes Launch at Wyre Forest School

A big thank you to the staff and pupils at Wyre Forest School for welcoming us in last week to talk all things special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Officers from the county council and NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire joined the visit to hear directly about the outcomes children and young people with SEND want to see. The team spent time chatting with pupils while they prepared lunches, made crafts and served customers in the local community café. Young people also prepared thoughtful questions for our Director of Children’s Services, Adam Johnston, NHS Director of Operations, Jade Brooks, and Voices United forum members Matthew and Myah.

Questions covered everything from funding for adult services, transport to college and accessible sports clubs, to adding widgets to our websites - alongside some lighter ones about favourite football teams and fast cars!

Over the past few months, our Co-Production Officers have been working with Voices United Worcestershire (our forum for children and young people with SEND) and have gathered views from more than 400 children and young people about what matters most to them and what a ‘good life’ looks like.

From this, young people created the following outcomes:

  • I feel welcome, included and part of a community where I belong
  • I feel safe and supported
  • I am listened to, understood and involved in decisions about my life
  • I am helped to be healthy in my body and mind
  • I enjoy life, have fun and am supported to reach my full potential

These outcomes will now be rolled out across the Local Area Partnership and sit at the heart of how we plan, develop and design services for children and young people with SEND. We know there’s more to do, but we’re glad to be working alongside our NHS partners, Worcestershire Parent Carer

Forum and Voices United Worcestershire to make this happen.

Abbeywood First School

What a fabulous session with some children at Abbeywood First school. We talked about pupil voice and the many ways children can share their thoughts and needs, e.g. using symbols, toys, drawing, writing, verbally, voice recorders, and more. Playdough was a clear favourite! The children shared lots about school, including their favourite (and not-so-favourite!) parts of the school day. We are really looking forward to visiting Abbeywood again and involving the young people in more projects!

Amy had the pleasure of going to WDCS's Christmas party at the weekend. The young people enjoyed searching the room for coloured letters, so they could spell a Christmas related word. Then watching the young people get their present from Father Christmas was heart warming. It was a great way to start the Christmas celebrations, and thank you to WDCS for making us feel so welcome.

Heart of Worcestershire College

We loved visiting Heart of Worcestershire (HOW) this week. Not only did Hannah from Speakeasy NOW invite us to join her and her colleague, Hayley, we also met old colleagues from previous jobs. We explained what co-production is to two groups of young people and invited them to join our network and or forum so they could share their views.

Hannah and Hayley introduced the idea of self- advocacy and explained how speaking up for yourself is a vital life skill. It was the perfect introduction to help them to understand how our forum is an incredible tool to practice that skill. The young people and staff were brilliant at joining in discussion and making us feel incredibly welcome. We are heading back in December to gather their opinions on different projects and practice the skill of self advocacy in a positive and productive way.

Your Ideas, Redditch

We had a great time visiting 'Your Ideas' in Redditch. The young people were enjoying a relaxed social environment where they could take part in games, art activities, cooking and sport alongside their friends in the community. We enjoyed our homemade sushi made by one of the young people during the session! Thanks for inviting us along!

Pitcheroak School, Whittington Primary, and Kempsey Primary

We have been into Pitcheroak School, Whittington Primary, and Kempsey Primary to find out from the pupils, "what is important to them and what does a good life look like?" This will help inform the Worcestershire SEND strategy plan.

Wyre Forest School

We have visited Wyre Forest School to deliver two workshops, one around life outcomes and one looking at Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP's) and gathering the pupil’s ideas on what an EHCP summary document should look like! They drew and wrote their ideas to help co-design a summary document.

We have met a few young people who are interested in joining the SEND forum, we have met some in school and the rest in local café's due to no current school placement.

Oasis Hub Warndon

We also visited Oasis Hub Warndon for their event on Saturday 5 July, where we spoke to families and children about what's important to them.

A big thank you to the schools, children, young people and families we have met so far. We look forward to meeting more in the upcoming weeks.

Youth Voice team fun day

It was fabulous to attend the Youth Voice team fun day on Sunday 13 July, the children and young people created a visual around the topic of 'What is important to me?'

SEND forum meeting

We are excited to say that we held our first SEND forum meeting on 17 July. We held it online and the young people involved did an amazing job at showing us how skilled and enthusiastic they are. We are so looking forward to our next meeting in August you can still join us if you would like to by completing the form on the 'How to get involved' page.

The Monday Night Club

We had a lovely evening at The Monday Night club meeting people and enjoying a bop to the disco tunes.
