Different ways to communicate (SEND co-production)
Find out different ways that we can communicate with children and young people with SEND.
A person’s 'voice' can be shown in many ways. It can include:
- what they say out loud
- what they show us through their eyes, face, or body
- the gestures or sounds they make
- their behaviour and actions
For people who are pre-verbal or non-speaking, we can listen to them in lots of different ways, for example:
- using picture grids or symbols
- letting them type their answers
- using technology that speaks for them
- signing and gestures
- looking at photos or videos of their responses
- using real objects or photos to show choices
- drawing or writing
- giving them time to process and respond
- choosing with toys, playdough, Lego, or stickers
- using sound buttons to record and say messages
- watching their facial expressions and body language carefully
Our aim is to make sure everyone can be heard and understood in a way that is right for them.
