Different ways to communicate (SEND co-production)

Find out different ways that we can communicate with children and young people with SEND.

A person’s 'voice' can be shown in many ways. It can include:

  • what they say out loud
  • what they show us through their eyes, face, or body
  • the gestures or sounds they make
  • their behaviour and actions

For people who are pre-verbal or non-speaking, we can listen to them in lots of different ways, for example:

  • using picture grids or symbols
  • letting them type their answers
  • using technology that speaks for them
  • signing and gestures
  • looking at photos or videos of their responses
  • using real objects or photos to show choices
  • drawing or writing
  • giving them time to process and respond
  • choosing with toys, playdough, Lego, or stickers
  • using sound buttons to record and say messages
  • watching their facial expressions and body language carefully

Our aim is to make sure everyone can be heard and understood in a way that is right for them.
